What to Expect from Coaching

How does coaching work

Every coaching client has a different situation, motivations, and needs. There is no typical coaching scenario. However, the process of defining steps to take and working those steps is often similar. Here are some of the key aspect of coaching to consider.

  • Clients do most of the work. There is no quick or simple steps to meaningful change in one’s way of being or movement in life without working at it for extended period of time. The coach can support, encourage, challenge, and hold accountable, but he/she does not do the work.
  • Coaching is not therapy. Therapy starts with a diagnosis of what is wrong and needs to be adjusted or healed. Coaching usually starts with core values and what wants to be.
  • Although relational development may enter coaching, the focus is on skills and tools development to improve personal awareness and capacity to align values and actions.
  • Coaching usually has stages such as assess, implement, plan, implement, review, and adjust.
  • By providing a safe, confidential space to explore and challenge yourself, the coach can help you to see yourself and your direction in new ways.
